Please can you help: where do I find pretty, large-size mastectomy bras in attractive colours?
That was the plea from one of SoSensational’s regular site visitors. We can’t imagine how difficult and emotionally painful it must be to lose a part of your body that is so intimate and so integral to your self-esteem, but some 10,000 women around the world each year lose one or both breasts to cancer or even to the threat of cancer – as did Angelina Jolie in 2013.
We know a pretty bra will not take away the feelings one has about this loss nor compensate for the emotional pain, but it is certainly nicer to look in the mirror and see oneself in pretty, matching underwear instead of boring old white-now-gone-grey-through-multiple-washes bra.
Over on our Brands & Boutiques pages, mastectomy bra specialist Amoena offers pocketed bras of every kind up to size 46DD, including pretty lacy bras, multi-way bras, padded bras, T-shirt bras and matching lingerie sets – many in nude and black as well as in gorgeous high-fashion colours.
Debenhams also offer a selection of mastectomy bras but the pretty ones from Royce and Spirit only seem to go up to size 40 though they do go up to cup size E and F; their bras up to 44 and 46 are by Amoena. John Lewis offer a small collection of post-surgery bras by Royce (so only up to size 40), as do Marks and Spencer whose prettier bras and the ones in colour are also in a maximum size of 40D.
There is always a better choice online, as all branches can never stock all styles in all sizes, so do take a look here and click through to Debenhams, John Lewis and Marks and Spencer
Our advice when shopping online for bras is to order several styles in two or three sizes each, try on at home (which is far easier) and return what doesn’t fit .
